Is Latin really making a comeback?

by Viva Avasthi

Ancient Rome

Despite The Economist's conviction that Latin is making a comeback, as described in their article from a couple of days ago, I beg to differ. In fact, I believe that the question is not, "Why is Latin making a comeback?" but rather, "Is Latin really making a comeback?"

I'm afraid the answer is, "Not really, no."

Although it would be brilliant if Latin really were making a comeback, The Economist's argument that Latin is becoming more popular can be refuted in two parts: by observing the ancient language's popularity in young people and by analysing just how popular the Latin-based services the newspaper refers to are. I'll also try to attempt to use ideas from behavioural economics to explain why Latin is not making a comeback any time soon.

Who Are the Real Winners and Losers of the Olympics?

by Viva Avasthi

A very thorough video created by The Economist to provide a useful overview of the impacts of the London Olympics 2012. It is definitely worth watching the entirety of this video as it makes the impacts on many types of people very clear.

In my opinion, the point made in this video about how there are no children's pools in the Olympics stadium is a particularly relevant one considering that schools are supposedly going to be making use of the Olympic venues in the future! Could this be seen as a sign that the legacy of the Olympics has not been very well planned by the government, despite what they say?

What do you think of the idea of The Teen Economists authors making their own videos in this way?

Please comment below and tell me if you would like to see more of these types of videos on the blog.

How Does The Weather Affect The Economy?

weather, winter, London, bus, economics for teens, economics for teenagers, teenage economist, teen economist
by Viva Avasthi

Living in the UK means that the weather has really (annoyingly!) been playing up recently. Only last week the weather was lovely but this morning there was a full-blown blizzard outside my bedroom window...

The Telegraph - Britain to be battered by gale force winds, snow sleet and rain as Winter returns for Easter 2012

OK, such a short burst of change in weather may not affect the economy much. However, this led me to thinking: just how much does the weather affect the economy? I'll focus primarily on the UK economy, of course, but since the world is so interconnected - through globlisation as you will probably be aware - I might just check out the impact of the weather on the global economy too (in a different post, perhaps.)
